Dracaena draco, commonly known as the dragon tree, is a slow-growing, long-lived, and visually striking evergreen tree native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and parts of western Morocco, renowned for its thick, sculptural trunk that branches out into umbrella-like clusters of stiff, sword-shaped blue-green leaves and for its dramatic silhouette, which resembles a giant, prehistoric-looking rosette, while its name is derived from the deep red resin—known as “dragon’s blood”—that oozes from cuts in the bark and has been historically valued for medicinal, artistic, and ceremonial uses, making this drought-tolerant and low-maintenance species a favored specimen in arid landscapes, rock gardens, and architectural plantings where both resilience and bold aesthetic impact are desired.
