Caring For Dracaena draco
  • Light: Prefers bright light and full sun. Ideal for patios, balconies, or sunny indoor spots near windows.
  • Water: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established.
  • Soil: Well-draining sandy or loamy soil is best. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Temperature: Thrives in UAE’s warm, dry climate. Tolerates high heat and occasional cooler nights.
  • Humidity: Adapts to dry air well; no need for additional humidity in UAE homes.
  • Feeding: Feed once in spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
  • Pruning: Prune lower leaves or damaged fronds to maintain its iconic shape. Minimal pruning needed overall.
  • Potting: Suitable for large containers. Choose a pot with good drainage and repot every few years.

Dracaena draco, commonly known as the dragon tree, is a slow-growing, long-lived, and visually striking evergreen tree native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and parts of western Morocco, renowned for its thick, sculptural trunk that branches out into umbrella-like clusters of stiff, sword-shaped blue-green leaves and for its dramatic silhouette, which resembles a giant, prehistoric-looking rosette, while its name is derived from the deep red resin—known as “dragon’s blood”—that oozes from cuts in the bark and has been historically valued for medicinal, artistic, and ceremonial uses, making this drought-tolerant and low-maintenance species a favored specimen in arid landscapes, rock gardens, and architectural plantings where both resilience and bold aesthetic impact are desired.
